Summary
Paris 1940. The city is overrun with Nazi troops, war rages in the air as Allied planes battle for supremacy in the skies and downed pilots struggle to survive. Trapped by the hell of war on a foreign land, many try to escape the bitter fields of bloody combat only to be captured and shot by the Gestapo. Only a few find the strength and courage to make their way to safety. Amidst the turmoil of war, a new kind of heroine is born - Mary Lindell. A beautiful and respected Englishwoman, Mary rescues downed fighter pilot Major James Leggatt from a German patrol in Paris, the former Red Cross nurse risking her life and family to smuggle him across enemy lines. When she returns from her harrowing journey, two more downed Allied pilots appear at her door. As Mary's underground railroad grows, so does the danger - and suspicion falls upon her being a spy. As Gestapo death forces close in, can Mary escape to freedom or will the Allies lose their most courageous heroine?
