Summary
March 30th, 1924: Mothering Sunday. Jane Fairchild, twenty-two-year-old maid to the Niven family, has - as is traditional for domestic staff - the day free to spend time with her mother. But she has no parents to visit, for she was abandoned as a baby on the steps of an orphanage. Then her plans to spend the day reading in the garden, bathed in sunshine, are abruptly skewered by a telephone call from Paul Sheringham - the soon-to-be-married heir to the Upleigh estate - with whom she has been conducting an illicit affair..
