The Lifters is the story of Granite ("Gran"), a young boy who doesn't quite belong anywhere, and Catalina, an enigmatic girl from school who surprises Gran one day by placing a door handle against a hillside, and swinging it open to reveal an underground world filled with terrors and wonders such as he's never seen. Catalina is bold and brash, where Gran is short for his age and perpetually unsure of himself, but when Gran encounters the Hollows--monstrous creatures who rocket through the tunnels sucking joy and hope out out of all they encounter--he finds strength he never knew he had. He is determined to join the Lifters, a select group of tunnel-dwellers with the power to fight back. And the chief of the Lifters sees potential in Gran. But he'll have to confront his own fears first, if he stands any chance at defeating the Hollows and saving his town.
