Summary
Edward Spini’s father, Clement, arrived in Australia from Italy in 1928. He ran the dairy at the New Norcia monastery before coming to work for Red Castle Brewery at their farm in Belmont. A few years later he moved his wife and family to Australia as well. Eddie was born in Australia and attended St Anne’s School in Belmont and later Catholic boys’ schools in Perth. He recalls a childhood spent swimming in the river and roaming a large area of Belmont, Redcliffe and South Belmont which was virtually all bush. To earn extra money he delivered bread for Corlett’s Bakery on Saturday mornings and cleaned up the mounting paddocks at Ascot racecourse on Saturday afternoons. He also worked for Frank Mattaboni whose market garden was situated where the Perth International Airport now stands. Eddie’s father had the whole family naturalised on arrival in Australia and he kept a low profile during the Second World War and escaped internment. He and Eddie’s older brother presented themselves for military service but they were both working in essential industries so they were not required to fight. Eddie enjoys playing the piano accordion and used to play for local dances. He met his wife Ida when he was playing at a wedding. They married in 1957 and are living in a home that Eddie built. He made sure that the house has a good cellar for his wine which he has been making from grapes in Herne Hill since 1960. Eddie knows the Belmont area like the back of his hand which is useful for when he does house calls for St Vincent de Paul as a volunteer
